GEM 2007 Activities and Retreats: Look what we’ve done!

January Careers that promote Standing Up for What You Believe inDiamonds

Making empowering plaques with Sandra Magsamen, Girls Learn to Board: Skiing and Snowboarding at

Ski Liberty (2 activities cancelled due to inclement weather)

SapphiresFebruary Careers that help take care of our heartsEmeralds

Lynne Bricks Fitness Facility to learn about careers in health and fitness by listening to Lynne Brick speak,

take a tour of the facility and take an NIA exercise class; Speakers about their careers in the foods and

nutrition industry, healthy eating (Eat well, Live Well Program) and cooking demonstrations provided by

Wegmans including a chef, store manager, personnel management. Kristen Conklin speak on relationships

affects on our hearts; PA/Heart Specialist spoke on how to physically take care of our hearts and medical

careers that work with the heart

March Spring into Action/Women’s History Month/Communication Skills

Research and presentations on Women who have made contributions to society; posters exhibited in school

library; Wendy Blumenthal presents effective communications, resume skills and job search process;

Communication activities including playing Pictionary and a non-verbal communication workshop; public

speaking seminar; negotiation skills; community service at local nursing homes; Crafts with Sandra

Magsamen; Introduction of third GEM cohort (Diamonds)

April Healthy Relationships/Careers that promote Healthy relationships and Financial Independence

TurnAround, Inc healthy relationships/careers in this field; fundraising for senior trip; "Sweet Charity" at

the Hippodrome Theater; public speaking, Financial Aid prep for college; Karaoke- singing and dancing;

Ropes/Adventure Course and Zip Line for team building and self-esteem building at NorthBay Adventure

Camp; Tai Chi, Quest Shield development; crafts; reflection activities; Financial Literacy~ establishing

wants and needs; Discretionary Spending; hiking

May Leadership and Responsibility/ Who Am I: The Journey Begins by Looking Within.

Retreat at Genesee Valley Outdoor Learning Center for the Diamonds focusing on team building and self confidence;

campfire; hiking, adventure course; building and sleeping in tents; Friendly Farms; Incentive

trip to Six Flags Adventure Park for Sapphires and Diamonds (needed to have perfect GEM attendance to

attend); CHS Senior Awards Ceremony; Emeralds attend and speak at GEM fundraiser~ BeDazzle: A

bright night for GEM. Responsibility and Leadership workshops. Girls sell crafts at CHS Spring Fair.

June Incorporating Hobbies into your life~ having a productive summer

Margie Goodman speaks about her career as a woman in a traditionally man’s career in industrial cleaning

supplies sales; Creation of "treasure boxes" out of donated cigar boxes; Orioles office tour; Orioles

Baseball game; Johns Hopkins University~ stay in the dorms and use the classrooms for workshops on

hobbies to keep us busy over the summer; Baltimore Museum of Art; Summer book club introduction;

Hobby skills taught by volunteers AmieSue Nochumowitz; Marlene Sereboff; Diane Egorin, and Sharon

Weinberg. Senior Graduation dinner at Center Club; Senior Trip.

*There are two themes starting in March, because we now have two groups on two different curricular years.

*We’ve incorporated an exercise component at each activity for 30 minutes. We also have "talk time" where we have

group discussions on whatever topic the girls want for 30 minutes.
